Insects
![]()
Insects are the biggest class of arthropods (largest animal kingdom branch) and the only ones with wings, which they use to migrate and travel. In addition, they are the most diverse group of animals on the planet. For instance, at the equator there are many varieties and ranges of insect species and their diversity also declines toward the north and south poles. There are over a million described species of insects, which is more than half of all known living organisms. Also, it is estimated that there are as high as 30 million indescribable insect species. Insect species represent approximately over 90% of the differing life forms on the planet. Furthermore, insects may be found in nearly all environments on the planet, however, only a small number of species occur in the oceans. Why do you think the insect population is so much larger than other animal species? Also, why do you think that there are so many different species of insects? Give some examples of insects.
